How does Fungal Nail Start?

Fungal nail can be brought on from various factors. One of the main ones and this might shock you, is that the infection is so highly contagious. So how can you avoid catching this unsightly infection from someone else? Avoid walking around barefoot at home even if none of your family members have the infection. A lot of people with the infection, don’t even know that they have it so you can never be too cautious.

Avoid walking barefoot in your local gym and gym changing room and showers, you’re pretty much guaranteed to be entering a showering or walking somewhere where someone has walked who has the infection. Speaking of gyms, continuously wearing sweaty shoes makes you more likely to develop the infection so ensure to air out your shoes after the gym and maybe use a shoe spray if you’re a gym bunny! While working your butt off in the gym to look good, the last thing you want is to end up with some ferocious looking finger tips!

For all you heel lovers or in fact shoe fanatics!! Have you ever wanted to buy a pair of shoes so badly that even if they don’t have your size, you buy them anyway? Buying a smaller size with the plan to stretch them out? Well stop it because buying tight shoes can caused fungal nail to develop and no pair of stilettos is worth that!

If this whole blog was irrelevant because you already have the infection, our only piece of advice is to nip it in the bud and get it resolved asap! Check out the laser fungal nail treatment page. It’s not going to go away by itself, in fact, it’ll just get worst.

How to cure Fungal Nail

Today’s blog is inspired by Michelle’s visit to our Dundrum clinic where she was seen by Hannah for her fungal nail treatment. Michelle has been suffering with the infection since she broke her nail 6 years. When the fresh nail grew, it brought the infection with it. As the infection was never treated, it spread into the rest of her nails as it is so highly infectious.

Hannah described the nail as being shorter and different to the rest of the nails saying it was a “purply colour”. What she described was so common and can happen among loads of different cases including wearing high shoes, wearing tight shoes, banging the nail and allowing the infection to settle in.

Michelle surprisingly said that the infection didn’t spread until the last year but this may not be the case. A lot of the time, fungal nail doesn’t have a colour so a lot of people don’t realise they have it until the infection progresses and discolours the nail. Other signs to look out for is thick and crumbling nails.

Is the treatment painful??

When we asked Michelle to rate her pain between one and five, she gave the treatment a 2 and said that she felt some heat on some toes.

When should I expect to see results? In and around 4 weeks’ time as the toe nails grow very slowly. What you’d be looking out for is a the clear nail growing around the cuticle as the treatment doesn’t affect the appearance of the current nail but it will stop the new nail from having the infection.

When’s my next treatment?

We’ll bring you in every 4 weeks for laser fungal nail treatment until the infection is gone. An estimate of how many you’ll need can be given at the consultation.

How can fungal nail start??

Fungal nail, also known as onychomycosis is a lot more popular than you think and sweaty feet isn’t the only cause of this unsightly infection.

You may be shocked to know that you can get the infection from something as simple as breaking your nail. As the nail bed becomes exposed, the new nail can develop the infection. It’s also good to note that the infection is highly infectious so contact among your nails must be avoided, which makes the infection even harder to live with as you can’t paint over the nails to cover it up as you’ll just be spreading the infection from nail to nail.

Have we got any top tips?? If you want to paint your nails, buy 20 bottles of the same colour or get that infection cleared up.

The only way to deal with it really is laser fungal nail treatment.

So we recently sat down with the very bubbly and charismatic, Breda Murphy and we couldn’t have been happier!!

Breda’s story is both interesting and shocking meaning that of course we had loads of questions to ask!

So why was Breda in our Dundrum clinic in the first place? Nail fungus or as you may know it as onychomycosiinline_796_http://havanaskinclinic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/fungal-nail-1.jpgs. She caught the infection while out gardening, she pricked her finger on a rose bush which led to the infection developing! Surprisingly enough, this not the most shocking part of her story, I mean who knew that you could get fungal nail off the prick of a rose bush????

Before coming to us to undergo laser fungal nail treatment for the infection, she had tried a couple of other different remedies. The first one was a lacquer that was prescribed by the doctor which involved Breda having to continually file down the top of her nail to apply the lacquer and after this proved to not work, she was advised to get an oral medication by a pharmacist which Breda had to then return to the doctor to get a new prescription for.

Now you would think that continually having to return to the doctor would be the worst part about Breda’s story but it’s not. Breda felt relieved after being prescribed the oral medication, this relief did not last long though. The oral medication resulted in Breda beginning to lose her taste buds and also resulted in mood changes and feelings of depression. Breda told us about how she just felt so low. Her son then researched the medication and found that people had been suicidal as a result of taking them and had completely lost their taste buds. After 2 months of taking the medication, Breda was both at her lowest and on her way to losing all of her taste buds.

Of course Breda made the decision to come off the medication as we all would and has now begun laser treatment for the infection. We’ll make sure to let you know hoe she gets on. J

It’s crazy to think that this all resulted from the prick of a rose bush.
